CON VOCE OPACA. STORIOGRAFIA E PLURALISMO DEL DIBATTITO PUBBLICO A PARTIRE DALLA 'QUERELLE' TRA HAYDEN WHITE E CARLO GINZBURG

The aim of this thesis is to define differences and continuities between the «need for truth» in historical research and the multiplicity of memorial narratives in the public debate. Then, I will study the ideological value of historical representations produced by the documentary methods of the modern historiographical tradition. I can summed up the philosphical question of this work in two points: is historiography a description of the past? Or should we argue that historians invent and impose instructions for imagining the proper meaning of the past itself? With this intention, I have recognized a famous dispute between the postmodern theorist Hayden White and the Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg as one of the most emblematic debates concerning the contraposition between the “truth” and “fiction” of historiographical narratives. However, this conceptual opposition presents theoretical limits to understand the position of these authors. Looking at the configuration of their controversy, I have replaced the ontological dichotomy between the “reality” and “fiction” of historical objects with another opposition, borrowed from the domain of philosophy of language: the opposition between the “referential transparency” and “referential opacity” of historiographical narratives.

Con l’intento di meglio definire le continuità e differenze che intercorrono tra il «desiderio di verità» della ricerca storica e la molteplicità delle narrazioni memoriali che animano il dibattito pubblico, la tesi s’interrogherà sul valore ideologico delle rappresentazioni storiche prodotte mediante le procedure documentarie della tradizione storiografica moderna. La domanda filosofica della ricerca può essere riassunta in due punti: in che misura la storiografia offre una descrizione del passato? O bisogna piuttosto credere che gli storici inventino e impongano istruzioni per immaginare correttamente il significato del passato medesimo? Tra i molti dibattiti che discutono la contrapposizione tra la “verità” e la “finzione” delle narrazioni storiografiche, la ricerca si è concentrata su una famosa disputa tra il teorico postmoderno Hayden White e lo storico italiano Carlo Ginzburg. Questa opposizione concettuale presenta tuttavia dei limiti teorici al fine di ricostruire le loro posizioni. L'obiettivo della ricerca è stato perciò quello di sostituire, nella configurazione concettuale della loro controversia, la dicotomia ontologica tra “realtà” e “finzione” degli oggetti storici con una dicotomia mutuata dalla filosofia del linguaggio: quella della “trasparenza” e dell’“opacità referenziale” degli enunciati storiografici.
