This case study, based on an analysis of Servius’ commentary on the eighth book of the Aeneid, examines expressions and terms which the commentator uses to refer to Virgil’s activity as a poet. The choice and use of vocabulary employed to designate composition, invention and organisation of poetic material do not only reveal a particular image of Virgil the poet to be conveyed to readers, but also point to the authorial function of the commentator as the one responsible for the linguistic and conceptual consistency of the commentary.

Abstract
This case study, based on an analysis of Servius’ commentary on the eighth book of the Aeneid, examines expressions and terms which the commentator uses to refer to Virgil’s activity as a poet. The choice and use of vocabulary employed to designate composition, invention and organisation of poetic material do not only reveal a particular image of Virgil the poet to be conveyed to readers, but also point to the authorial function of the commentator as the one responsible for the linguistic and conceptual consistency of the commentary.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
