The Sahara as a whole is a contested space with different meanings and identities generated both from within and imposed by external actors. This chapter discusses the nature, background and history of this contested space, focusing on its physical landscape and evolution, and the ways in which varied human activities have been shaped by, and in turn have shaped, its range of landscapes and multiple identities.
