This article analyzes the representation of sexual aggression in pastoral novels published during Cervantes' lifetime, and contrasts its treatment with that it received in La Galatea. Communalities across the corpus include the eroticization of sexual violence about to take place and its justification via a rhetoric of ingratitude that blames the woman for failing to reciprocate. Both features are rejected in Cervantes' La Galatea.
