Valchiavenna (SO) is the valley where the dialectal varieties of the Western Lombard and Alpine Lombard groups meet. For this reason, it has long been the focus of linguistic interest, as demonstrated by the vocabularies edited by the Centro di Studi Storici Valchiavennaschi (CSSV) and by the Istituto di Dialettologia e di Etnografia Valtellinese e Valchiavennasca (IDEVV), as well as toponymic inventories edited by the Società Storica Valtellinese (SSV). Today, research proceeds in these directions, but now targets wider accessibility for both citizens and dialect-speakers, and a more effective safeguarding of local dialects, which have been marginalised or have gone extinct after decades of linguistic competition with Italian and prestigious dialectal varieties (such as Milanese and Comasco). In this regard, three research perspectives are crucial for the conservation of local dialects: the increase of oral documentation by means of an active and structured cooperation between researchers and volunteers in the area; the digitization of lexicographical works already published; the geo-referencing of toponymic inventories. These research perspectives are discussed in the first part of the contribution, together with a dialectological and sociolinguistic presentation of the valley; the second section illustrates two projects currently underway in the Valchiavenna municipalities of Piuro and Novate Mezzola. The first project, named 'Piuronomastica', is a geo-referenced inventory of the dialectal toponyms of the municipality of Piuro, while the second project consists of a dialectological and ethnographic investigation coinciding with the reprint of the Vocabulary of the Novate Mezzola dialect by Sandro Massera (1985) and envisaging the publication of a DVD of interviews accompanying the dictionary reprint. This investigation is part of the broader project 'Voices of the Adda and Mera rivers', promoted by IDEVV and intending to create a sound archive of the dialect varieties of the province of Sondrio.

Abstract
This investigation is part of the broader project 'Voices of the Adda and Mera rivers', promoted by IDEVV and intending to create a sound archive of the dialect varieties of the province of Sondrio.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
