The rural world was familiar to most children that attended compulsory education in Italy between the nineteenth and the twentieth century. As a consequence, the so-called rural schools – primary schools set in municipalities with a low number of inhabitants, therefore different from agrarian schools – had their own textbooks and handbooks, different from those conceived for urban schools. This essay gains deeper insight into the topic through the analysis of a sample of textbooks. It will discuss whether they were inspired by pedagogical theories and current guidelines, if and how they represented a means of agrarian education, and shed light on the role played by commercial schoolbook publishers.

Abstract
The rural world was familiar to most children that attended compulsory education in Italy between the nineteenth and the twentieth century. As a consequence, the so-called rural schools – primary schools set in municipalities with a low number of inhabitants, therefore different from agrarian schools – had their own textbooks and handbooks, different from those conceived for urban schools. This essay gains deeper insight into the topic through the analysis of a sample of textbooks. It will discuss whether they were inspired by pedagogical theories and current guidelines, if and how they represented a means of agrarian education, and shed light on the role played by commercial schoolbook publishers.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
