Appunti per un significato della ripetizione musicale nella società contemporanea

The purpose of this article is to analyze the role of musical repetition within the context of contemporary society, focusing especially on repertoires in between popular and art music. We will address the major topics about repetition referring to the work of musicians, musicologists, philosophers and cultural theorists who were involved with it during the XX century. Repetition has always been an important part of music making in every musical culture; however, during the last century we have witnessed an increased use of repetition within the context of western music who never valued much repetitive structures. We must then question ourselves about the meaning of socalled repetitive music: why are we attracted by it despite the fact that we usually tend to consider repetitive things boring, monotonous and unoriginal?
