A lawyer and lecturer in comparative law at the University of Turin, he was a "travelling" jurist, in geographical terms as well as in his research topics. Passionate about English law, he went to libraries in Britain, took part in international conferences and taught, as a visiting professor, also abroad. In middle age, his travels took on the diffrent hue of expatriation: he left Italy not because he was a Jew expelled under the racial laws, but as early as 1935 when he left in opposition to fascism. And with his wife Lisa Scopoli he found refuge in England.
