Tra le poesie non approvate dal Manzoni: la vicenda ecdotica dei Versi improvvisati sopra il nome di Maria

The essay reconstructs the history of Manzoni's «Versi improvvisati sopra il nome di Maria» thanks to new witnesses. The poem was known for a long time through an apograph copy that belonged to Gaetano Giudici; on this one Ruggiero Bonghi conducted the posthumous editio princeps in 1883. Manzoni's «Versi» were republished with significant variants by Michele Scherillo in 1922 on the basis of a new aphograph witness so far considered lost. The text provided by Scherillo was accepted by Ghisalberti in 1957, then by all other later editors. However, the manuscript copy found by Scherillo and now resurfaced casts doubts on the editor's behaviour, and thus on the validity of the text he provided.

Il contributo ricostruisce la storia dei manzoniani «Versi improvvisati sopra il nome di Maria» alla luce di nuove testimonianze. I «Versi», a lungo noti attraverso una copia apografa appartenuta a Gaetano Giudici su cui Ruggiero Bonghi condusse nel 1883 l’editio princeps postuma, vennero riproposti con varianti significative da Michele Scherillo nel 1922 sulla scorta di un nuovo testimone apografo finora considerato smarrito. Il testo fornito da Scherillo fu accolto da Ghisalberti nel 1957, quindi da tutti gli editori successivi. Tuttavia, la copia manoscritta a suo tempo rintracciata da Scherillo e oggi riemersa getta dei dubbi sull’affidabilità del comportamento dell’editore, dunque sulla vulgata del testo.
