settlement of the begin- ning of the Middle Bronze Age (MBA I) at Calvatone - fondo Cassio (Cremona). We present a Bronze Age pottery assemblage found in 1919 by Giovanni Patroni at Calvatone (Cremona). Here, Patroni identified a Bronze Age settlement cover- ing an overall area of 3000 square meters. Finds from Calvatone include, besides a large number of potsherds, a polished greenstone axehead, a flint sickle blade, artefacts made of deer antler, fired clay tools for spinning and weaving, as well as wattle and daub fragments. As for the pottery, diagnostic types comprise cari- nated bowls and cups, ‘axe-shaped’ and ‘T-shaped’ handles. Other distinctive fea- tures are the horizontal tubular handles on the neck of bowls, as well as grooved curvilinear decorations, which are common on bowls, cups and biconical vessels. Considering the data provided by Patroni, in particular the scarce thickness of the Bronze Age layers, and the typological homogeneity of the finds, the Calvatone assemblage has been attributed to a single, specific stage representative of the be- ginning of the Middle Bronze Age (MBA I), i.e. to the so-called ‘Calvatone Hori- zon’ (term coined by R.C. de Marinis). The ‘Calvatone Horizon’ is well attested in northeastern Italian sites such as Lavagnone, Fiavè, Castellaro Lagusello and Camponi di Nogarole Rocca

Abstract

settlement of the begin- ning of the Middle Bronze Age (MBA I) at Calvatone - fondo Cassio (Cremona).
