Henriette Davidson Avram: the Value of Exchange · From the mid1960s and for nearly three decades, Henriette Davidson Avram played a key role in the evolution of research all over the world. Defined as «the Henry Ford of library automation» and «the Melvil Dewey of the 20th century», it is to her that scholars owe the opportunity to know and have easier access to materials held in the most important libraries ever. The launch of the marc format, or MAchine-Readable Cataloguing, and, with it, the possibility to produce, classify and share bibliographic information, the inception of the retrospective conversion of catalogues, the emphasis placed on the authority control process are proof of Henriette Avram’s care for the quality and swiftness of the services provided by libraries to users and scholars, beyond any geographical or linguistic boundary.

Dalla metà degli anni Sessanta del secolo scorso e per quasi un trentennio, Henriette Davidson Avram ha svolto un ruolo fondamentale per l’evoluzione della ricerca in tutto il mondo. Definita «the Henry Ford of library automation» e «the Melvil Dewey of the 20th century», a lei gli stu- diosi devono l’opportunità di conoscere e accedere più agevolmente al ma- teriale conservato presso le maggiori biblioteche esistenti. L’introduzione del formato delle registrazioni catalografiche leggibile dagli elaboratori (marc) e, quindi, la possibilità di produrre, ordinare e scambiare i dati biblio- grafici, l’avvio del recupero retrospettivo dei cataloghi, la rilevanza data al processo di controllo di autorità testimoniano l’attenzione di Henriette Avram alla qualità e celerità dei servizi offerti dalle biblioteche a utenti e stu- diosi, al di là dei confini geografici e linguistici.
