Abstract
Having arrived in Japan in the mid-16th century, the Jesuits were a valuable inter- locutor for hierarchical local society in a period of political and military instability. The So- ciety’s ability to present itself as a mediator of western technology facilitated its establish- ment, and the alliance with both regional and central military elites ensured its fortunes for almost half a century. This article aims, on the one hand, to investigate the instruments used by the Society to reach the privileged position it occupied until the first expulsion edicts at the end of the 1580s. On the other hand, it reflects upon the causes of the failure of a mission that, still in 1586, seemed to be oriented towards complete collaboration with the new centripetal impulses of the Japanese military class and which, in the following five years, was forced to rethink its presence in the Archipelago.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
