Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is one of the main exploited Water-Soluble Polymers (WSPs), from packaging production to biomedical purposes. However, despite its widespread use, there still seems to be some controversy regarding its chemical safety. In this brief chapter the main knowledge in the PVA (eco)toxicological field is summarized, highlighting how new studies, especially related to the PVA ecotoxicity, are urgently needed to define a clear and complete scenario about the safety of this substance both for humans and ecosystems.

Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is one of the main exploited Water-Soluble Polymers (WSPs), from packaging production to biomedical purposes. However, despite its widespread use, there still seems to be some controversy regarding its chemical safety. In this brief chapter the main knowledge in the PVA (eco)toxicological field is summarized, highlighting how new studies, especially related to the PVA ecotoxicity, are urgently needed to define a clear and complete scenario about the safety of this substance both for humans and ecosystems.Pubblicazioni consigliate
