Narrating a New, Old Ireland at the Tailteann Games: Between Body and Cultural Politics

Resorting to the tools of Content and Discourse Analysis, this essay investigates the media and literary representation of the Tailteann Games, the so-called Gaelic Olympiad that took place every four years from 1924 to 1932. The aim is to explore the socio-political and cultural implications of the event, given that Ireland had recently gained independence from Westminster and the memory of the brutalities of the civil war was still vivid in the minds of the Irish; therefore, the Tailteann Games became the occasion for the government to project, nationally and internationally, an image of their country as a dynamic, welcoming nation, ready to leave behind the violence of the recent past. At the same time, the sporting event allowed Ireland to question itself on issues of national identity and belonging.

Tramite il ricorso agli strumenti della Content and Discourse Analysis, il presente saggio si propone di investigare la rappresentazione mediatica e letteraria dei Tailteann Games, la cosiddetta Olimpiade Gaelica che ebbe luogo ogni quattro anni dal 1924 al 1932. L’obiettivo è sondarne le implicazioni socio-politiche e culturali, visto e considerato che l’Irlanda aveva da poco conquistato l’indipendenza da Westminster e la memoria delle brutalità della guerra civile era ancora vivida nella mente degli irlandesi; pertanto, i Tailteann Games divennero l’occasione per il governo di trasmettere, a livello nazionale e internazionale, un’immagine del Paese come una nazione dinamica, accogliente, pronta a lasciarsi alle spalle la violenza del passato recente. Al contempo, la manifestazione sportiva permetteva all’Irlanda di interrogarsi su questioni di identità e appartenenza nazionale.
