Starting from the study of the revolt of Samnites and slaves that were employed in Rome for the equipment of theRoman fleet in 259 BC, the paper aims at analyzing the role of the Samnites among the so-called socii navales of Romein the context of the first Punic war. The episode will also contribute to assess the Samnites’ maritime activities in thefirst half of the 3rd century BC.
