Th e aim of this paper is to investigate themes and forms of memory in two historical novels by Filippo Tuena: Ultimo parallelo and Le variazioni Reinach. I will focus on the close relationship between photography, historical memory and personal memory, analysing the rhetoric of the dialogue between text and image. In this way I will try to show that in Tuena’s historical novel, photography is not only a document, but it problematizes the concept of memory and operates as an estranging element within the texts.

Abstract
