An extensive and varied literature on homicides throughout the world is critically analyzed, centering in particular on Western countries (Western European and Anglo-Saxon countries) and Latin America. It extends from descriptive studies of homicide rates, to other studies that explain the factors affecting their geographic distribution and even includes historical, and social studies on the matter. Socio-economic and structural indicators are considered, as well as cultural variables associated with homicides. Among these, the authors highlight political and institutional factors linked to the State, such as the existence of stable, legitimate and effective political systems, established democracies, respect for human rights, more liberal criminal systems, and acceptable economic and social policies, as elements that can contribute to the reduction of homicide rates.
