Abstract

Object: In the clinical field, innovative technologies such as automated systems for image and signal analysis, extended reality and metaverse, robotics applied to surgery or rehabilitation, big data, wearables, 3D and 4D printing, blockchain applied to clinical data, and artificial intelligence are rapidly evolving. The availability of advanced technologies can have various consequences on the relationship between doctors and patients, which deserve careful consideration from clinicians and researchers. In recent years, computer technologies have become easily accessible resources commonly used in the healthcare field, both for professional updating and by patients and families to obtain information about diseases and treatments. In particular, alongside common search engines, the availability of so-called artificial intelligence tools has recently emerged in patients' use of seeking healthcare information. Method: The international scientific literature of the past 2 years was collected through online databases including Medline, Cochrane Library, and PsychINFO. Results: The potentials and limitations of using these technologies in the clinical field are described. Conclusions: The use of certain AI technologies is now something real and serious. Although it is important that AI never replaces consulting with a clinician, it is crucial that the traditional conception of designing communication and information does not overlook the experimentation of these new technologies, avoiding leaving their management to individuals with varying degrees of knowledge or to profit-driven entities
