La Villa della Grotta a Sperlonga: la grotta e la villa

The Roman “Villa della Grotta” in Sperlonga is known for the grotto and for the sculptural program of mythological subjects that decorated it. Here are some considerations on the relationship of the residence with the landscape and that between the cave and the architecture of the villa, still little studied, also in relation to the results of recent researches by the University of Milan (2013-2017), which focused on the architectural and service structures (i.e. ovens, kitchens, torculars). The continuity of imperial attendance at the villa for several centuries is testified by some sculptures and portraits and by the transformations of the architectures and of the cave.
