This paper aims to emphasise two themes dealt with in Verdolini’s book L’istituzione reietta, through a comparison with some experiences made in the context of the Milan University’s Prison Education Project: the need to counter the tendency of penitentiary institutions to be considered a space removed from the rest of the city community, on the one hand, and, on the other, the need to try to remedy the obvious inadequacy of prison as a re-educational institution
