L'esegesi in figura : Cicli dell'Antico Testamento nella pittura murale medievale

The re-reading of the Hebrew Scriptures constitutes a founding element of Christianity, committed from the very beginning to the reinterpretation of the first in the light of the later, maintaining the text but overturning its meaning in the light of a new function. The Hebrew Scriptures thus became the Old Testament, inseparably linked to the New Testament as historical antecedent and source of prefigurations of Christ and the Gospel message. In the process of building a new religious imaginary, the importance of the parallel construction of a visual imaginary was soon understood, starting from the representation of single biblical episodes and then elaborating narrative sequences. The iconographic experimentation of the early Christian age offered the early Middle Ages and then the Romanesque age a corpus of themes and schemes to be selected, reworked and enriched, each time according to the context, the liturgical space and the meanings to be conveyed. Covering a wide chronological span, the volume addresses these issues through thematic insights by art historians and philologists of different backgrounds and training, but united by contextual and interdisciplinary methodologies. The focus is on the Italian peninsula, but with significant openings to the Franco-Germanic transalpine area, Scandinavia, the Iberian Peninsula and the Byzantine East, revealing a socio-political-cultural interweaving that reveals an interconnected medieval Europe.

La rilettura delle Scritture ebraiche costituisce un elemento fondante del Cristianesimo, impegnato sin dai primordi nella reinterpretazione del prima alla luce del poi, mantenendo la lettera del testo ma ribaltandone il significato alla luce di una nuova funzione. Le Scritture ebraiche divennero così l’Antico Testamento, inscindibilmente legato al Nuovo Testamento quale antecedente storico e inesauribile fonte di prefigurazioni di Cristo e del messaggio evangelico. Nel processo di costruzione di un nuovo immaginario religioso, presto si comprese l’importanza della parallela costruzione di un immaginario visuale, partendo dalla rappresentazione di singoli episodi biblici per poi elaborare coerenti sequenze narrative. L’intensa sperimentazione iconografica di età paleocristiana offrì all’alto-medioevo e poi all’età romanica un ricco corpus di temi e schemi da selezionare, rielaborare ed arricchire, ogni volta in funzione del contesto materiale, dello spazio liturgico e dei significati da veicolare. Coprendo un ampio arco cronologico, il volume affronta tali questioni mediante affondi tematici di storici dell’arte e filologi di diversa provenienza e formazione, ma accomunati da metodologie contestuali e interdisciplinari. Il focus è sulla penisola italiana, ma con significative aperture all’Oltralpe franco-germanico, alla Scandinavia, alla Penisola iberica, all’Oriente bizantino, facendo emergere un intreccio socio-politico-culturale che restituisce un’Europa medievale interconnessa.
