The mercantile class achieved social success during the century and a half between the arrival of the Austrian Habsburgs in Lombardy (1706) and Unification of Italy. During the period of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, the process of fully legitimising the commercial power in the city’s ruling class was completed. This chapter examines the economic and social rise of the mercantile class in Milan and their contribution to early manufacturing initiatives and family strategies. An entire category gained ground and visibility in urban and public institutions, bringing a new ethic of entrepreneurship and work.

Abstract

The mercantile class achieved social success during the century and a half between the arrival of the Austrian Habsburgs in Lombardy (1706) and Unification of Italy. During the period of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, the process of fully legitimising the commercial power in the city’s ruling class was completed. This chapter examines the economic and social rise of the mercantile class in Milan and their contribution to early manufacturing initiatives and family strategies.
