«Una melanconia soave e serena» : Purgatorio V nei commenti ottocenteschi

«A suave and serene melancholy». Purgatorio v in nineteenth-century commentaries · The 19th-century tradition of commentaries on the Comedy is branded as biased erudition (D’Ovidio); but the 19th century also saw a triumph of romantic and patriotic readings of Italian classic novels, and Dante’s works lend themselves to such views. Canto v of the Purgatory provides different cues (of a theological, structural, linguistic, historical, moral, pedagogic and stylistic nature) and therefore it can be taken as an example for the different types of commentaries that appeared throughout the century. This essay reviews the commentaries of Luigi Portirelli, Niccolò Giosafatte Biagioli, Brunone Bianchi, Luigi Bennassuti, Giuseppe Campi, Giovanni Francesia, Giovanni Andrea Scartazzini and Giacomo Poletto. It places emphasis on the parts of such commentaries, covering a time span from 1804 to 1894, that are most relevant to the reading of the canto, in the attempt to find elements of consistency and innovative hints in the exegetic practice, partly affected by the educational-civic purpose the poem was invested with.

La tradizione del commento alla Commedia nell’Ottocento è tacciata di angusta erudizione (D’Ovidio); ma il XIX secolo vede anche il trionfo delle letture romantiche e patriottiche dei classici della letteratura italiana, e l’opera dantesca offre l’agio a interpretazioni simili. Il canto V del Purgatorio presenta spunti differenti (di ordine teologico, strutturale, linguistico, filologico, storico, morale, pedagogico, stilistico) e può perciò essere adottato come campione delle diverse modalità di commento che attraversano il secolo. Il saggio prende in esame i commenti di Luigi Portirelli, Niccolò Giosafatte Biagioli, Brunone Bianchi, Luigi Bennassuti, Giuseppe Campi, Giovanni Francesia, Giovanni Andrea Scartazzini e Giacomo Poletto. Dei suddetti commenti, distribuiti tra il 1804 e il 1894, si pongono in rilievo gli aspetti più significativi nella lettura del canto, affinché emergano elementi di continuità e spinte innovative nella prassi esegetica, condizionate anche dalla funzione didattico-civile di cui è investito il poema.
