Nachwirkungen auf der Bühne

This lemma presents the theatrical reception of Friedrich Hölderlin's work and, in particular, the dramaturgical, aesthetic and scenic fortunes of his tragic fragments "The Death of Empedocles", translations of Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex" and "Antigone", theoretical essays and other texts as well as the poet himself as a stage character. After a discussion of the premises of this reception in 19th-century literature and philosophy, the first performances at the beginning of the 20th century, the various phases throughout the 20th century (with particular attention to German theatre) up the post-dramatic turn, and the international reception in contemporary theatre are illustrated.
