The object of this perspective clinical study was to analyse the clinical findings, treatment and follow up of 21 cows admitted to the Clinic for Ruminants of the Large Animals Teaching Hospital of Lodi because suffering from a right displaced abomasum/abomasal volvulus (RDA/AV). On admission, the animals were submitted to clinical examination and blood was sampled for hematology, hemogasanalysis and electrolites titration. RDA/AV was corrected surgically and a saline solution was infused in some animals on the base of the clinical and laboratory findings in order to correct acidbase and electrolyte balance and dehydratation. Body temperature, appetite, ruminal motility, defecation, cardiac frequency and milk production were considered after surgery asindex of clinical recovery. After treatment, 18 animals (85.7%) resulted productive, even if a pregnant cow had an abortion and 2 animals presented a relapse that was surgically corrected. As a post-operative complication with negative outcome we observed a posterior functional stenosis in 2 cases (9.5%), while 1 animal (4.8%) was salvaged but resulted not productive. In spite of that described in literature, we obtained a different correlation between pulse rate, involvement of forestomachs and prognosis. The hemogasanalysis resulted a valuable aid to carry out a suitable saline infusion during the post-operative care.
