At the turn of the twentieth century, the European catholic world went through a deep crisis: aversion to modernity, deeply rooted in ecclesiastical circles since the French Revolution, had been drying up Church culture. Moreover, with the new century, many catholic intellectuals thought it right to respond to the demands of their age. In Italy, modernism not only dealt with theological and exegetic questions but it also stood out for its social engagement, characterized by a strong interest for the living condition of the “last”. At the beginning of the twentieth century the first democratic catholic groups engaged a close dialogue with the socialist world.

Abstract
At the turn of the twentieth century, the European catholic world went through a deep crisis: aversion to modernity, deeply rooted in ecclesiastical circles since the French Revolution, had been drying up Church culture. Moreover, with the new century, many catholic intellectuals thought it right to respond to the demands of their age. In Italy, modernism not only dealt with theological and exegetic questions but it also stood out for its social engagement, characterized by a strong interest for the living condition of the “last”. At the beginning of the twentieth century the first democratic catholic groups engaged a close dialogue with the socialist world.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
