The occurrence of gastric mucosal changes in patients with portal hypertension (defined as portal hypertensive gastropathy) was recognized about 20 years ago. The clinical relevance and natural history of this condition are defined. More recently, colonic mucosal changes also have been described in these patients. With the advent of video capsule endoscopy, small bowel mucosal changes have been observed. Contrary to portal hypertensive gastropathy, the prevalence of portal hypertensive colopathy and enteropathy remain poorly defined.
