Approximately 20 years after the Seveso accident, we designed a case-control study on 101 subjects who developed chloracne after exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and 211 controls from the same area, to establish the dose-exposure relation and to identify dioxin susceptibility factors. Subjects with elevated plasma TCDD levels (>10 pg/g fat) showed an almost 4 times higher risk of developing chloracne. Chloracne risk was higher in subjects with high TCDD plasma levels, young people (≤8 years) and/or those with fair hair. The health status of chloracne cases twenty years after the accident was not different from that of control subjects.
