The relationship between pleural mesothelioma and asbestosis is universally accepted. Less importance has been given to its connection with chronic pleural disease, particularly tuberculosis. In a group of 35 patients affected with mesothelioma, neoplasm arose in 3 patients with calcific pleural tuberculosis, at a ratio of 1:8.5. The cause may have been indirect chronic stimulation or even direct action from oncogenic substances contained in the pleura.
