Use of rhytidoplasty techniques in parotidectomy

Objective. Plastic surgery techniques are applied to the prevention of some complications of parotidectomy including: facial nerve injury, Frey's syndrome, unfavourable scarring, retromandibular depression and asymmetric contour defects. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of rhytidoplasty techniques in parotidectomy. Methods. Nine patients (three males, six females; aged 40-72) underwent parotidectomy for parotid neoplasms. A rhytidoplasty technique, including modified rhytidoplasty incision, elevation and imbrication of Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System (SMAS) flaps and skin excision, was performed. Results. During a mean follow up period of five years, nor temporary or permanent deficit of the facial nerve or Frey's syndrome occurred. All patients were satisfied with postoperative aesthetic appearance. Conclusions. Modified rhytidoplasty approach to parotid surgery with SMAS remodelling and skin excision are a valid procedure with good aesthetical results. These techniques could play a role in the modern conservative management of salivary glands.
