We find the political category of paroikoi in several inscriptions of Asia Minor both in the Hellenistic age and in the first two centuries of the Roman Empire. In modern historiography there are strong uncertainties and different positions regarding the individuation of paroikoi. According to a widespread interpretation the term designated the foreign residents in the city. On the basis of the examination of the epigraphical texts this study maintains the opinion that the Asia Minor paroikoi were free indigenous inhabitants resident in the territory of the city, but lacking political rights. They were the correspondent in the city of the laoi of the basilike chora.
