Despite the recognised importance of Tartini’s Scuola delle Nazioni, an in-depth contextualisation of Tartini’s teaching activities in the European landscape of the 18th century is lacking, as well as a comprehensive frame of reference that can clarify the relationships between teacher, pupils and professional environments in different geographical areas. By studying the pan-European networks between Tartini’s pupils, their professional integration into the music market and the dissemination of their musical output such as compositions and treatises, it will be possible to trace the ramifications of a didactic tradition and understand the enormous impact it had on the music chapels at the courts of the time. In order to study the transmission of musical knowledge associated with a 'school' in eighteenth-century European violin playing, a new international joint project has been developed, involving musicologists with complementary expertise active in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Italy. The research team will work on three central fields (reconstruction of the Scuola in the context of patronage, use and reception of Tartini’s didactic materials, music transmission through printers) linked by a comprehensive digital prosopographical resource including biographical data from archival research, the music corpora of the pupils, and the digital edition of Tartini’s pedagogical writings. Drawing on a factoid model and enhanced by linked open data, this resource will enable the analysis of pupil’s careers, allowing for comparisons between music genres and musical compositional patterns, while the analysis of social networks will map the transmission of musical knowledge and the reach and impact of the Scuola. The cooperation between researchers will lead to the organisation of international workshops, scholarly-informed concerts, two English-language publications and a joint academic course.
