Abstract

Cobalamin is essential for infant neurodevelopment; high levels of propionylcarnitine, methylmalonic acid and/or homocysteine at expanded newborn screening allow the identification of maternal secondary deficiencies. An inadequate intake of cobalamin is a frequent cause of deficiency in pregnancy. Today’s aim is to define clinical and biochemical phenotype and the adequate therapy; future prevention strategies are needed.
