In letters 31 and 44, Jerome gives thanks to his addressees for sending gifts. First, some further elements stemming from Origen's scriptural exegesis are pointed out in the scriptural and moral interpretation of the gifts. Second, Jerome's 'thankful letters' are placed within the frame of the sub-genre of 'thankful letter where a spiritual exegesis of gifts is presented' (before Jerome, Basil; after Jerome, Paulinus of Nola). Third, the role played by these letters in Jerome's epistolary Selbstdarstellung as a biblical and moral auctoritas is dwelt upon.
