We report here on the outcome of a 4-day training course on safe use of pesticides that was addressed to public health operators in a tropical area. The course was run by two lecturers and consisted on lectures and on practical exercises. Lectures dealt with all relevant issues including classification and labelling, target pests, efficacy toxicity, ecotoxicity, personal protective equipment, hygienic procedure, waste disposal. Local and international perspectives were also presented. Practical exercises included interpretation of labels and case studies. The framework of this training course can be used in different countries either with all teachers on-site or using distance-learning devices such as videoconferences for some of the teachers

Abstract

Training of workers is an essential component in obtaining a safe working environment. Depending on the tasks of the trainees different levels of details and information have to be provided. In any case, background information that helps in understanding the suggested or recommended procedure, use of general and individual protective equipments, and first aid measures has to be provided to the trainees. In fact, understanding of the rationale enhances the adhesion to the rules of proper behaviour in the workplace.
