Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a very common skin disorder that has its peak during adult life. There is no specific treatment and patients suffer from frequent relapses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and the tolerability of a new O/W emulsion specifically formulated for SD. Methods. An open study was carried out: 20 patients (12 males and 8 females) affected with a mild form of SD were enrolled. The treatment consisted in an application of the product twice a day for 30 days. The levels of erythema and desquamation were evaluated at the beginning of the study and after 15 and 30 days. Standardized macro-photographs were taken at the beginning and end of the study. Results. The emulsion reduced the grade of erythema and desquamation by 55% and 75% respectively in treated patients. Conclusion. This study demonstrates the efficacy of an O/W emulsion specifically formulated for treating facial SD, where the phenomena associated with this latter condition are compounded by damaging physical and chemical environmental factors. Given the characteristics of the formulation used, this emulsion may be recommended as a tool for managing the clinical manifestations of SD where one wishes to minimise the use of drugs.
