OBJECTIVES. The Authors report a case to show the management of two horizontal root fractures, involving the root middle-third, followed for 3 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The Authors analyse diagnostic instruments and discuss different treatment options according to the presence of pulp vitality and the type of root fracture. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS. Root fractures (i.e. injuries involving dentin, cementum and pulp) are relatively uncommon lesions, accounting for 0.5-7% of traumas in permanent dentition. Permanent upper central incisors and patients in second decade of life are more frequently affected. Fractures li-nes may be classified according to their direction, position and number. All these factors influence treatment planning. Timely referral of patient and correct repositioning of root fragments seem to have a great influence on treatment outcome.
