In outlining his programme for the spiritual renewal of England, John Wyclif, the late medieval English philosopher and theologian, has to face the question of which form of political organization is best suited to accomplish a plan that entrusts the secular power - the Crown and the great lords - with the task of reforming the ecclesia anglicana, leading it back to the primitive purity of the apostolic Church. Wyclif’s answer takes into due account the frailty of the human condition, irreparably marked by the consequences of the Fall, but it mirrors at the same time his model of ideal government (the one he calls “policia iudicialis”).

Abstract

In outlining his programme for the spiritual renewal of England, John Wyclif, the late medieval English philosopher and theologian, has to face the question of which form of political organization is best suited to accomplish a plan that entrusts the secular power - the Crown and the great lords - with the task of reforming the ecclesia anglicana, leading it back to the primitive purity of the apostolic Church. Wyclif’s answer takes into due account the frailty of the human condition, irreparably marked by the consequences of the Fall, but it mirrors at the same time his model of ideal government (the one he calls “policia iudicialis”).
