Piloti, che donne… : le italiane e lo sport automobilistico (1920-1990)

Motor racing is one of the few sports in which, virtually, men and women could be compared on an equal footing, but, in fact, the number of women drivers has always been infinitely lower than that of men and, therefore, a large selection has not be possible. The reasons are probably to be found in a cultural attitude: since childhood, cars belong to the sphere of male competences; excelling in motor racing should not be tied to the gender, but rather to a matter of will, attitude, expertise in dealing with this sport: to make the difference it is the approach. To run for vanity or to seek the popularity of the exception has always proved limiting. Running with dedication, ready for anything to reach the target, has brought some women to brilliant results, naturally on the condition that they have adequate means at their disposal. The "ladies of the races" in Italy have been, since the dawn of the competitions, more than can be imagined, even if the history of female motor racing, apart from rare exceptions, has been, so far, treated in a decidedly marginal way , sometimes even inaccurate and incomplete.

L’automobilismo è uno dei pochi sport in cui, virtualmente, uomini e donne potrebbero confrontarsi alla pari, ma, in realtà, il numero delle donne pilota è sempre stato infinitamente inferiore a quello degli uomini e, dunque, è sempre mancata un’ampia base di selezione. Le ragioni vanno probabilmente ricercate in un fatto culturale: sin dall’infanzia, le macchine appartengono alla sfera delle competenze maschili; l’eccellere nell’automobilismo non dovrebbe essere però legato a un fatto di genere, ma piuttosto a una questione di volontà, di attitudine, di serietà nell’affrontare questo sport: a fare la differenza è l’approccio. Correre per vanità o per cercare la popolarità dell’eccezione si è sempre dimostrato limitativo. Correre con dedizione, pronte a tutto per raggiungere l’obiettivo, ha portato alcune donne a risultati brillanti, naturalmente a condizione di avere a disposizione mezzi adeguati. Le “signore delle corse” in Italia sono state, dagli albori delle competizioni, più di quante si possa immaginare, anche se la storia dell’automobilismo femminile, a parte rare eccezioni, è stata , sin qui, trattata in modo decisamente marginale, a volte anche impreciso e lacunoso.
