The show proposes a comparison between Lucio Fontana and Leonardo da Vinci, starting from the great Exhibition devoted to Leonardo da Vinci and Italian inventions held at Palazzo dell’Arte, Milan, from 9th May through 22nd October 1939. The Leonardo Exhibition was organized by the fascist regime as a propaganda celebration of the Italian genius and its creative superiority. In the exhibition entrance hall, a bas-relief featuring a Golden Rearing Horse by Lucio Fontana was set up against an enlargement of a famous drawing by Leonardo from the Windsor Royal Collection Trust depicting the Bombard Factory. This episode, long forgotten, is today the occasion to try to understand how a Twentieth century artist might have looked to a Renaissance master, what were the thematic and iconographic suggestions that might have inspired him, what formal or methodological inputs were reworked in a modern key. Through the presentation of drawings, sculptures and ceramics by Fontana, the exhibition develops around the themes of the horse and of the battle, where our modern artist welcomed the suggestions from Leonardo’s studies for the Battle of Anghiari and for the equestrian monuments of Francesco Sforza and Gian Giacomo Trivulzio. The exhibition also aims to pay tribute to the 1939 Leonardo Exhibition thanks to large-format photographic reproductions of some of the exhibiting halls and to the display arrangement that draws inspiration from that major event.

La mostra propone un confronto tra Lucio Fontana e Leoanrdo da Vinci a partire dalla grande Mostra di Leonardo da Vinci e delle Invenzioni Italiane che si tenne presso Palazzo dell’Arte a Milano dal 9 maggio al 22 ottobre 1939, fortemente voluta dal fascismo come celebrazione propagandistica del genio italico e della sua superiorità creativa. In quell’occasione, nell’atrio d’ingresso un bassorilievo con Cavallo rampante dorato di Lucio Fontana venne installato su una gigantografia di un famoso disegno di Leonardo di collezione Windsor raffigurante l’Officina delle Bombarde. La mostra parte da questo episodio a lungo dimenticato per cercare di comprendere come un artista del Novecento abbia guardato a un maestro del Rinascimento, quali siano state le suggestioni tematiche e iconografiche, quali quelle formali o metodologiche rielaborate in chiave moderna. Attraverso la presentazione di disegni, sculture e ceramiche di Fontana, la mostra si sviluppa attorno ai temi del cavallo e della battaglia, per i quali l’artista accoglie le suggestioni degli studi di Leonardo per la Battaglia di Anghiari e per i monumenti equestri di Francesco Sforza e Gian Giacomo Trivulzio. Anche l’allestimento è un omaggio alla Mostra Leonardesca con la riproduzione fotografica a grandi dimensioni di alcune sale e con la citazione di soluzioni espositive adottate in quell’occasione.
