The Arsinoe II coinage, minted in Egypt by Ptolemy II after the queen's death, were marked by a sequential numbering system characterising serial production: this system is considered exceptional by numismatists. The presence of similar sequential systems and, to a lesser extent, of letter-labels to indicate series, annualities or dies in different ancient contexts, from Neapolis to Velia, Samos, Rome, at least from the beginning of the 5th century BC, seems to make the phenomenon of labelling Arsinoe coins in the 3rd century BC not so isolated: it would have been a practice or rather an administrative possibility, certainly not usual, but essentially useful in the definition of a monetary series.

Abstract
The Arsinoe II coinage, minted in Egypt by Ptolemy II after the queen's death, were marked by a sequential numbering system characterising serial production: this system is considered exceptional by numismatists. The presence of similar sequential systems and, to a lesser extent, of letter-labels to indicate series, annualities or dies in different ancient contexts, from Neapolis to Velia, Samos, Rome, at least from the beginning of the 5th century BC, seems to make the phenomenon of labelling Arsinoe coins in the 3rd century BC not so isolated: it would have been a practice or rather an administrative possibility, certainly not usual, but essentially useful in the definition of a monetary series.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
