This article analyzes the outcomes of the second meeting of the UN ad hoc open ended Informal Working Group to study issues related to the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity beyond Areas of National Jurisdiction, held in April-May 2008 at the UN Headquarters New York, with particular attention to the issue of marine genetic resources, their legal status and the attempt to define their legal regime.
