The area to the east of the city of Varese (Italy) is characterized by anomalous concentrations of Arsenic in soils, with potential influence on the quality of exploited groundwater. The Arsenic concentrations are normed by the Italian law D.Lgs.152/06 which prescribes limit values (CSC) for land use. In the recent infrastructural design of the strategic connection between the province of Varese-I and the Canton Ticino-CH, known as “railroad Arcisate – Stabio”, were found critical issues in soil management plan, in which we highlight widespread exceedances of CSC. The statistical study for the evaluation of the distribution of Arsenic among the geological units was conducted by applying two different approaches: a normative, with the use of reprocessed concentration values according to the method established by the standard and a geological with the use of such as values. The first defined the samples as belonging to the same population while the second has determined a distinction between the same and a difference of the average concentration of about 9 mg/kg in favor of the “Allogruppo di Besnate” undifferentiated. The analysis of data on the quality of exploited drinking groundwater showed that concentrations of Arsenic have values lower than the regulatory limit and are not affected by geological and hydrogeological characteristics of aquifers.
