The members of Academies in Italy and in Europe between the end of the XVIII and the first decades of the XIX Centuries became very interested in ancient Egypt. The main reasons of this interest, from the Napoleonic Expedition in Egypt to the deciphrement of hieroglyphs are examined in this paper, together with the presentation of the main scholars from Lombardy who took part in the debate.
