As early as 1899, when his works were unedited, and for the most part totally unknown, Pierre Mandonnet presented Boethius of Dacia as an Averroist. Although this historiographical category has since been subject to serious questioning, Boethius is still habitually considered as one of the main representatives of the Averroist tradition. Such judgments, however, are not grounded on a precise analysis of Boethius’ use of Averroes’ Aristotelian commentaries and philosophical treatises, which in fact has hitherto never been undertaken. Aiming at filling this gap, this paper provides a systematic examination of all explicit quotations from the Averroes Latinus in the literary production of this renowned thirteenth-century Arts master, and demonstrates that he made a limited, selective and critical use of it. Far from being his most important source, Averroes therefore seems to have played a limited role in Boethius of Dacia’s works. Significantly enough, in the works adopting the format of the disputed question only approximately one third of Averroes’ explicit quotations occur in the solution, while all the others are to be found in the arguments for and against, or in the final counter-arguments.
