Food waste is a huge problem for the world population; it impacts on both environment’s and peo-ple’s health. Food waste implies increasing of litters, which impacts on the environment and causes worsening of disparities, and malnutrition in poor populations. This paper discusses food waste from an educational perspective and, specifically, from the perspective of food education. According with a preliminary analysis of national and international literature, we conclude that constructing a food literacy is fundamental to reduce waste. This process should be implemented through holistic, experiential and environmental approaches and it is likely to be more effective if framed in a wider project aimed at implementing ecoliteracy, intended as the capacity of understanding natural systems that enable and sustain life on earth.
