The article considers Jhumpa Lahiri's short story "Unaccostumed Earth", claiming that it merges Indian and American cultural heritages. Particularly in the character of the elderly father, it is possible to distinguish the transformation of the grihasta into a Vanaprashta, or at least a partly secularised version of this transformation.
