The article analyses Italy's geographic mobility during the second half of the twentieth century, by using ILFI data supplemented with geographic and demographic information at the municipal level. First, the distribution of geographic mobility is described both in general and with respect to short and long-distance moves. Then, event history models are projected in order to investigate what factors underpin individuals' propensities to move, again with respect to short, long, and general moves. Findings confirm the main results of the literature: mobile individuals correlate positively with education, youth and marriage, and negatively with occupation and children. Correlation patterns, however, vary considerably among different types of geographic mobility.
