The paper focuses on Bayle's and Leibniz's intervention into the debate on Cudworth "plastick nature" or Leclerc's "natures plastique", and on the relationship of this concept with the Leibnizian concept - recently much discussed - of the «machines de la nature". Also Leibniz's confrontation with Cudworth's daughter, lady Masham, is taken into account, to get a comprehensive view of this multi-faceted dialogue, which reflects a complex rethinking of the concept of nature, at the crossroad of finalism, mechanism and vitalism.

Abstract

The paper focuses on Bayle's and Leibniz's intervention into the debate on Cudworth "plastick nature" or Leclerc's "natures plastique", and on the relationship of this concept with the Leibnizian concept - recently much discussed - of the «machines de la nature". Also Leibniz's confrontation with Cudworth's daughter, lady Masham, is taken into account, to get a comprehensive view of this multi-faceted dialogue, which reflects a complex rethinking of the concept of nature, at the crossroad of finalism, mechanism and vitalism.
