The Authors conducted a thorough analysis of the information available in the traffic accidents database regarding the experience of the Milan morgue in the period January 1994 to June 2004, covering a total of 2550 cases. Those of these cases involving motor vahicles (cars, lorries, bises and agricultural and industrial vehicles) totalled 1100 cases (43,2%), of which 1030 cars, 61 lorries, 6 buses and 3 agricultural or industrial vehicles. There were 596 cases (23,3%) involving motorcyrcles, of which 325 involving motorcyrcles and 271 mopeds, 259 cases (10,1%) involved bicycles. of alla the parameters available for each individual case, those considered of most forensic medical interest were: sex and age of the victim, place and time of the event, position of the victim in the vehicle (driver, passenger), dynamics of the event, use of the safety belt or helmet, period of survival after the event, lesions suffered and cause of death. A specific section of the study looked at correlations between lesions and position of the victim in the vehicle, lesions and dynamics of the accident, lesions and survival time, and lesions and the use of means of protection (for example the helmet).
